The High Country is home to several great hiking trails. There are dozens off the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are also treks surrounding Mount Jefferson.
One of the more popular - and daunting - challenges is taking on the area surrounding Grandfather Mountain. The landmark is surrounded by more than 4,000 acres of hiking area. That includes the 2.4 mile Grandfather Trail, which can be tackled in a variety of segments.
It's also a fun family experience, as evidenced by one family's video. Imagine considering this playground part of your neighborhood!

The route follows the crest of Grandfather Mountain from the Hiker's Parking Area out 2.4 miles to Calloway Peak.
It was along this trail two centuries ago that noted French explorer and botanist Andre Michaux broke into song thinking he had arrived at the highest point in North America.
A century later, famed naturalist John Muir was inspired to describe the sight as "the face of all Heaven come to earth."
It's also a fun family experience, as evidenced by one family's video. Imagine considering this playground part of your neighborhood!
