Things to do on a weekend - Enjoy a Christmas-themed day in Boone

Nothing beats a Saturday morning cheering on Santa. The jolly elf is making his annual visit to Boone this weekend during the downtown Christmas parade. He'll be one of just many entrants to slowly traverse King Street bringing holiday cheer.

Boone Christmas parade SantaExpect community dancers, the Watauga High School marching band and fire trucks.

“And a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus,” Fotta said.

Not including fire trucks, DBDA officials expect between 25 and 35 groups participating in the parade.

The parade starts at 11 a.m. and is the first in a day of full local activities and heavy traffic.

As has also become a coincidental tradition, the parade is followed by a football playoff game. The Appalachian State football team plays host to Maine in the second round of the NCAA Division 1 playoffs. While hundreds are expected to line the street for the parade, several thousand will be filling Kidd Brewer Stadium at the 2 p.m. kickoff.

The day ends with the 16th Annual Solar Christmas Tree Lighting, sponsored by the ASU Sustainable Energy Society. The tree is located outside the historic Jones House in downtown. It will be lit at 8:30 and, according to the report, "The tree's light emitting diodes (LEDs) use less energy than filament bulbs and a photovoltaic array is used to charge a battery during the day. At night, the battery drains the stored energy, lighting the tree."
