Things to do on a weekend - Catch early holiday spirit

Ashe County continues its tradition of the earliest Christmas parade in the region with the annual West Jefferson Holiday Parade Saturday. Beginning at noon more than 50 groups will show off their best joy to the world as the High Country begins its unofficial countdown to Christmas.

West Jefferson Christmas parade“There's Santa Claus on the last float, Cub Scouts, Boys Scouts, Girls Scouts, Brownie Scouts, over $1 million worth of fire trucks, commercial floats and entries from all different kinds of businesses, churches that have Christian-themed floats, dancing girls from the dancing schools, just a community event that is a tradition,” (Pete Yates, parade co-chairman with the West Jefferson Lions Club) said.

Also included will be the Ashe County High Husky Vanguard Marching Band, and the school's Junior ROTC unit and 50-flag brigade. Several elected officials are also on the lineup card.

The parade has been ongoing each year since World War II. The event is co-sponsored by the West Jefferson Merchants Association and the Town of West Jefferson, with organization, supervision and judging by the West Jefferson Lions Club.

The town will have its official Christmas tree lighting next week. Plenty of other events quickly follow.
