Live the Dream #34 - Home of the holiday shoebox

This is collection week for Operation Christmas Child, a time when hundreds of thousands of shoeboxes are packed with toys and treats for distribution overseas. Many of those boxes first stop in the High Country via Samaritan's Purse, the Boone-based organization which oversees the annual project. It's an effort to both spread the ministry of Jesus Christ worldwide, and give gifts to children living in poverty.

Since 1993, more than 86 million gift boxes have been handed out in more than 130 countries. Boxes are taken year-round, but November 14-21 is Collection Week for boxes to be delivered during the holiday season.

In the High Country alone, hundreds of people volunteer time to help gather the boxes, inspect them, and prepare them for the hands of an eager recipient. That includes churches, non-profits, community groups and students. Neighbors sharing time with neighbors, all bringing joy to the world.
