Winter makes an early cameo in the High Country

Saturday was the first day of October. It was also the first day of snow in most of the High Country area.

Early Boone snowThat's right. Snow. On October 1. That's one of the earliest appearances by winter's trademark precipitation in recent memory. Accumulation was evident in the high elevations of Beech Mountain and Grandfather Mountain. In Boone, the flakes fell heavily but in most places left little more than a think white sheen. The photo to the right is from the Howard's Creek Road area, and was posted at the facebook page for Watauga County Road Conditions and Weather Updates.

The snow didn't last long, as it was quickly replaced by late morning with blue skies and sun. The early cameo was brief, but significant in one major aspect - there's yet to be a frost. Yet.
