Live the Dream #26 - Ola Belle Reed Festival

The summer music season will soon be winding down. But some fine music remains to be played. The sixth annual Ola Belle Reed Festival is scheduled for this weekend in Lansing. It features three days of music in honor of the late Ola Belle Reed, an acclaimed songwriter and musician. Her signature song was "High on A Mountain."

This year's lineup is packed.

Ola Belle ReedBig Country Bluegrass is headlining the festival, which also features Wayne Henderson and the Elkville String Band, Mosier Brothers, None of the Above, Ceol Leinn, The Sheets Family, The Harris Brothers, Back Porch Bluegrass, and McCumberland Gap. Admission to the festival is free and donations are quite welcome.

Lansing Creeper Trail Park behind the Lansing Volunteer Fire Department, will offer much needed shade for festival guests, swings for children, walking trail, primitive tent camping, Big Horse Creek for wading, and pedestrian access to Downtown Lansing shopping and eating.

The festival started soon after Reed's death in 2002. It keeps both her music and art alive, as a 2006 article explains.

The Demolition String Band, from Hoboken, N.J., recorded a whole album of songs by Ola Belle Reed. A 2004 review in the music magazine, No Depression, praised the album and called Reed "one of country music's best kept secrets" whose "lyrics and melodies embody the inexhaustible quality of the heart of great folk songs." ...

(In 2005) people in Lansing, population 151, got together with their neighbors who live outside town and formed the Greater Lansing Area Development to keep good things going.

The impetus for the festival came after a friend of the school's new owner was visiting New Jersey and mentioned Lansing to a friend who is a member of the Demolition String Band.

Word came back to GLAD about how many younger artists from many types of music are embracing Ola Belle Reed's legacy.

Here are more details in the life of a great local talent. And the inspiration for another great weekend of music in the High Country.
