Live the Dream # 21 - Musicfest 'n Sugar Grove

Doc Watson at MusicfestMost bigtime music concerts are held in large venues in large cities. One grand exception is the annual Musicfest 'N Sugar Grove. The two-day flow of top notch bluegrass is played out on the grounds of historic Old Cove Creek School about 20 minutes from Boone. A large tent is pitched on the school-sized football field field. It's surrounded by smaller tents of various vendors, as well as the playground area attached to the school.

The musical lineup includes more than 20 performers on two separate stages. Music begins both days at 10 in the morning and doesn't end until the MusicFest Jams runs out of steam (usually after midnight). There's also opportunity for attendees themselves to join in the flow.

New to this year's festival is The Mountain Times Pickin' Parlor, where anyone can pick and grin. "Bring your instruments, whatever you play, and we'll get you on stage and get you heard," Red, White and Bluegrass's John Tester said, adding that the Pickin' Parlor will be emceed by members of Surefire and Carolina Crossing.

The old student lunchroom of the former Cove Creek School has been transformed into a spacious room where visitors can pick on their own instrument or join in a jam with others. There's also plenty of room for those who want to watch friends, family and community members strut their stuff.

And of course, local legend Doc Watson is expected to play.
