Live the Dream #14 - Blowing Rock Horse Show

How old is the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show? The year it debuted Warren G. Harding was President of the United States, no one had ever heard of a Great Depression, and a sweet baby boy named Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson was born nearby.

It was 1923 when equestrian enthusiasts first gathered in the High Country to celebrate their affections. Eighty-eight years later the show is still going on. It attracts rides from across the region, the atmosphere vibrates hospitality and all proceeds benefits local organizations. It returns to the saddle Thursday.

Blowing Rock Horse ShowRecognized as the oldest continuous horse show in the country, the event now spans almost three weeks split into two segments and functions as the organizations’ primary fundraiser. Four full days of American Saddlebred competitions will begin on Thursday and continue through Sunday.

Highlights include some of the most exciting classes: the three and five gaited open championship classes, the roadster classes—both under saddle and in harness—and the Hackney divisions. The harness classes always feature lots of chrome for flash and the carriages and tack used by exhibitors cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
