Live the Dream STAT: My how the High Country has grown

11,911 - Population growth in the High Country area from 2000 to 2010, according to the US Census. The total combined population Watauga, Avery and Ashe counties increased by 14% in that span.
The High Country area has seen tremendous growth the past 10 years. According to Census data, an average of 3.2 people moved to the area every day. Most of the growth was recorded in Watauga County, home to Boone and Appalachian State University. The population there increased by 8,384 to a total of 51.079 residents.
Ashe County also experienced a growth spurt, increasing by 2,897 to 27,281. Avery County grew by just 630, to 17,797.
Combined, the High Country area now boasts 96,157 residents. Big on paper, but small town in life.
