Things to do on a Friday night - Enjoy a Fish Fry Friday

Today marks the start of the annual Fish Fry Fridays in downtown Sugar Grove. Organized by the Mountaineer Ruritan Club, the all-you-can-eat dinners are held the second Friday of every month, April through October. The menu features freshly fried fish, fried chicken, coleslaw, french fries, hushpuppies and drink. More than 400 plates are served on a average night.

The Mountaineer Ruritan Club is composed of members primarily from the Vilas/Cove Creek/Sugar Grove area of Watauga County. The Frys are the group's primary fundraiser. Proceeds are used to support various community groups and needs, such as the nearby schools. A 2009 issue of High Country Magazine reported on the Frys. (page 98)

Year after year, the fish fry continues to grow in popularity. The fish fry offers a warmer, more open atmosphere than the cold separation of a restaurant, (Mountaineer Club member Laura Johnson) commented.

"You see more people in the community than you ever do any other time," she noted. And in the Sugar Grove/Cove Creek area, where there are no grocery stores or restaurants, the fish fry is one of the few central destinations that locals can call their own.

"It's something happening in the community, not in town." Laura said.
