Record December snow blankets High Country

Winter Storm Diego blanketed the High Country with snow recently. Some areas reported more than two week of the white stuff, which began falling late on Saturday night and continued into Monday.

According to local news reports, "Snow totals ranging from 16.5 inches to 26 inches across Watauga County, including a 24-hour December record, were confirmed by the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, Va for the Dec. 8-10 period."

That's for the Boone area. Elsewhere in the High Country, "The National Weather Service is reporting that Jefferson got 19 inches of snow, Beech Mountain received 16 inches of snow and Boone got 15 inches of snow. These numbers are reported from official NWS weather stations. Other preliminary snow totals indicate that Piney Creek in Alleghany County got 20.5 inches of snow, Sugar Mountain got 20 inches of snow, Meat Camp and Lenoir both had 18 inches, Fleetwood ended up with 14 inches and Hickory got 14 inches."

Social media was populated by dozens of great photos showing off the majesty of a record early snow. Here are just a few shared by the High Country Association of Realtors twitter feed.
