Things to do on a weekend - Get the kids in a fire truck

Watauga County Emergency FestHow often does a kid ever get a chance to:

- pilfer through a helicopter?
- pretend to drive a fire truck?
- lets loose with a fire extinguisher?
- direct a water hose in full spray?
- see the Jaws of Life in action?

All in the same day?

Those are just a few of the attractions to the annual Emergency Fest, set for this Saturday in Boone. A parking lot at Appalachian State will be packed with various emergency units from the area, including fire departments, first responders, SWAT teams and even a bomb disposal unit. There's also music, clowns, a bounce house, Smokey the Bear, giveaways and several emergency type drills. It's all free and open to the public, with the goal promoting injury prevention and family preparedness in the event of an emergency.

Among the demonstrations are a first responders unit enacting their work at the scene of a wreck, tearing a vehicle apart piece by piece. There's also a smoke house, which welcomes kids inside to learn to crawl along the floor if their home is on fire.

Along with ambulances and fire trucks, there is usually a helicopter or two on hand, from the Med Center Air out of Charlotte and WINGS Air Rescue out of Johnson City. The copters are open for families to sit in, explore and pose for photos. Get their early enough, and you can watch them land.
