Live the Dream #9 - New River Marathon

A long run involves endurance, rhythm and stone cold concentration, but with a touch of tired pain. Nothing helps sooth that hurt more than a front run seat to the natural beauty of the High Country.

Early Saturday morning more than 700 people gathered in Ashe County to sweat alongside beauty. They "ready, set go"'d for the New River Marathon, a road race which meandered alongside its namesake.

The course spreads over an elevation change of roughly 100 feet. It follows along the South Fork New River, one of only 14 American Heritage Rivers in the United States. Also, according to organizers, some 13 miles are along Railroad Grade Road, a North Carolina Scenic Byway. Of course, residents can tackle this course most anytime. All you need are some running shoes and breath to be taken away!

The USATF-certified marathon was split in two - a full and a half. A strong 265 were there for the whole deal. Another 500 pre-registered for the half. And early results show - it was a blast!
