Happy Birthday to the highest town east of the Mississippi

Beech Mountain photoOne of the youngest towns in North Carolina officially turned 30 Sunday. Happy birthday Beech Mountain, which at 5,506 feet above sea level, is the highest incorporated community east of the Mississippi River.

The town was incorporated the same year its tourist attraction, the Land of Oz, closed. Now Beech Mountain is known for its ski resort, Ski Beech. The town's full-time population is just under 400, but grows to around 4,000 in the summer months, according to a local history by Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria.

Ronald Tee Johnson does a regular series of video centered on the Beech Mountain area. In recognition of the 30th birthday, he spoke to the owners of Fred's General Mercantile, a mainstay in the community.
